One of 2003’s biggest surprises for Anime on both sides of the Atlantic was a laugh-out-loud hilarious, 45-minute itsy-bitsy gem called ANIMATION RUNNER KUROMI, a zany romp about the trials and tribulations of a young woman taking a job at –you guessed it– an animation studio. Given the success of this OVA, it’s almost no surprise that a sequel would follow three years later. “Sequel” is a term that many viewers alarm, as it often translates to “improper follow-up.” This does not include ANIMATION RUNNER KUROMI 2; all the eye-popping gags, fast-forward paced wackiness, and sidesplitting humor that made the novel so remarkable fun are support. (So are the same deliver actors in the dub, but more on that later.) Equally beautiful is that the glossy production values courtesy of Akitaroh Daichi and his studio have returned, maintaining a sense of consistency. I cherish it when follow-ups maintain consistency.

While this bodes well for an immensely keen sequel, all is not well for the workaholic Kuromi and her charges at Studio Itsy-bitsy. Shortly after the cancellation of their successful present “Time Journeys”, the shrimp facility finds itself juggling three different shows at a time; they even seem to be falling leisurely on schedule. The position takes a turn for the worse with the arrival of Rei Takashimadaira, a self-proclaimed professional. Unlike Kuromi and company, he is obsessed with meeting deadlines rather than doing a quality job. What ensues is a hilarious clash of wills as our heroes struggle with his pushy, snobbish ways. In the waste, how will their shows turn out?

Finding out is only section of the entertainment value. Equally comely is Central Park Media’s treatment of this sequel: the video and audio quality is on par with the fresh release, with a few recent extras to boot. In what may probably be the best bonus (not that it has to be), all the recount actors from the edifying English version of KUROMI are relieve. Well, most of them anyway–Suzy Prue is replaced by Carol Jacobanis, and the president is voiced by Mike Pollack, but both match the novel voices so closely it’s hard to know the dissimilarity. The link leisurely the whole dub, is a bang-up performance by one of Novel York’s most common relate actresses, Lisa Ortiz as the overworked Kuromi herself. Ortiz has always been a current yell actress of mine ever since I heard her as Deedlit in Relate OF LODOSS WAR, and I have since heard her scream in many other roles (and yes, that includes Lina Inverse from SLAYERS!) . Hearing her recount in anything fair makes my heart throb. As such, it is very comely to hear her return–she even improves from the first time around, as well. When Kuromi finally cracks down into hilariously exaggerated frustration, it’s determined Ortiz is having a blast.

Wayne Grayson, Dan Green, Eric Stuart, Angora Deb, and Rachael Lillis reprise their roles as Kuromi’s staff, and are fair as fun the second time around. However, Green steals the prove as the snobbish producer Takashimadaira. Typically I have heard him do serious roles in productions such as JUNGLE EMPEROR LEO and NOW AND THEN, HERE AND THERE, but this is one of his most FUN performances to date. Major kudos to Tom Wayland and Tripwire Productions for pulling off a dub every bit the equivalent of the modern, and besting it.

As for the sequel itself, it’s hard to imagine even the most picky of Anime fans passing up ANIMATION RUNNER KUROMI 2. Crammed with more laughs and entertainment, it delivers as a well-behaved follow-up… although the only negative is that it’s all over after 45 minutes. Perhaps we’ll explore a third installment in the advance future?

I really enjoyed the first OAV and getting a chance to recognize the behind-the-scenes of an anime studio from the lively parody and the abundant of special features featured on the first DVD.

With this second OAV series, “Fruits Basket!” director Daichi Akitaroh, Watanabe Hajime and Itami Aki are relieve together for round II of the adventures of Studio Petit. And again, the OAV was a winner at the 2005 Tokyo Anime Radiant.

This time, Kuromi’s boss decides to have the staff work not on unprejudiced one series but three series.

For Kuromi, in her mind, more anime series means more staffing but not for Studio Petit. It’s more of everyone shifting their to different priorities and working on three anime series all at once.

Of course, with the staff being pushed to their limits and having to work on three series that are so different from each other, there is anxiety that the episodes for the series will not be completed in time.

Kuromi tries at first but everyone continues to have their excuses and leave work early.

But things change when the boss of Studio Petit brings in a archaic producer who will do what it takes to compose positive the staff completes their deadlines in time, even if that means sacrificing quality. Even if it means firing the staff.

After watching this series, I actually had the same impression of Kuromi that anime studios, when they work on multiple series, more staff is brought in. But after watching this series, I can discover how difficult things are if there are no staff hirings and the same staff have to work on multiple series.

This would probably respond why we have seen quality differences in animation (ie. the beginning half of “Ranma 1/2 and the latter half) why a series was not as splendid as it employ to be.

But all in all, how this is handled on this latest “Animation Runner Kuromi 2 is hilarious, fun and scrumptious.

The unusual OAV series was released succor in 2004 and unlike the last series which kept switching from animation to character sketches, this one doesn’t do that. And I didn’t mind that one bit.

AUDIO:

I watched the OAV series both in English and Japanese and both are well done. There is no moral action and if anything, it’s more or less an anime that is plump of dialogue. But audio for the lisp work and music came certain and found no problems.

SPECIAL FEATURES:

Central Park Media/US Manga Corps really delivered in terms of special features on the first OAV DVD release. The same with this second DVD.

Included are alternate angles, storyboard features, interview with Daichi Akitaroh, A segment titled “A Day in the Life of Kuromi”, art gallery, sketch gallery, Kuromi trailers and more.

The intervew with Daichi Akitaroh is around eight minutes long and he goes into why a sequel was created and how he wanted to tie up a few loose ends left from the first. How he also wanted to go deeper by adding a rival for Kuromi for this episode.

My popular was a 10 dinky feature with Japanese train actress Asoh Kaori (Kuromi) having to work as an animation runner for a day at an anime studio.

In this featurette, Asoh goes to the residences of the animators to win up completed pieces and unprejudiced running befriend and forth from the office. Also, a message from the staff slow the second OAV series. This was very fun to recognize and although everyone was in a enchanting mood for this feature, I can only imagine how things are during deadline week at an anime studio.

But again, CPM delivered on the special features for this second DVD.

Being a grand fan of the John Landis novel I decided to give this movie a chance and sat down with some popcorn and soda and hit “play.” Moments later I was shaking my head and pondering switching to one of my celebrated television shows.

This movie is a pale imitation of the current `American Werewolf in London’ and I imagine that the director of that 1981 classic John Landis was none to cheerful to be associated with this production (in the credits it refers to using characters from the unique) .

Right from the get-go we can voice though that whereas the recent had a unfavorable dry ride of humor to it (one of the tracks was `Blue Moon’) this one is instead going to pick a more slapstick reach.

As the movie begins we join three American friends who are on a round Europe swagger taking a series of daredevil stunts. Being obviously hormone driven (they all eye-up a French girl on the utter and discuss how European girls are more sophisticated), I would venture a guess they would feel quite at home in a Farrelly brothers production. Upon arrival in the French capital they sneak onto the Eiffel Tower at night and as one of them prepares to bungee jump off the top some swiftly thinking allows the hapless hero to put a girls life.

Left with only the girls shoe the three track down the girl down after which time they witness her deep secret.

This may be some people’s thought of a ample or fun movie. Personally though it was not mine and afterwards I did switch to eye Prue, Piper and Phoebe battle demons and warlocks.

I cannot own that this movie was made. Honestly, if you’re gonna do a sequal to An American Werewolf in London, win Rick Baker and John Landis succor, not some no-name hacks. Don’t even bother with this movie, and don’t confuse it with it’s far grand prequal, An American Werewolf in London

I swore I would not originate this DVD until after seeing L. Cohen in Oakland the Monday after next. But I’m so blissful I broke my instruct.

This is one of the most astonishing concerts I’ve ever seen captured on DVD.

The band and Leonard’s singers are suitable, and one senses that they feel as though they are a fragment of something special.

The songs span nearly 40 years of a canon that is second to none.

Most improbable of all,though, is how a digital disc can sever through its fill technology and exude so noteworthy warmth and passion. Even when the camera shows a stop shot of Cohen, one can smooth sense the warmth, appreciate and admiration coming from the satisfied London audience.

As for Leonard Cohen…if he were to do nothing but command, that would be enough given the amazing breadth of material performed at this concert.

However, his gentle and obedient assert of the stage provides this prove an added depth and dimension. Within the span of minutes he can be hilarious, self-deprecating, humble, poignant, appreciative…and I could easily go on with the superlatives to recount his on-stage demeanor.

Very often I effect a point of remembering to trust the art and not the artist. In the case of Leonard Cohen, I tend to trust both. His warmth seems top-notch. Unlike so many of his stature, his humility comes across as actual. His spoken words are every bit as remarkable as those that are sung. Given the draw that the barriers are broken down between the singer and the band and the audience…to the point where it feels as though they are all piece of one celebratory evening…such humility, graciousness and warmth cannot be anything but capable.

The highlights are too many to mention: “Suzanne” sounds as novel as it did 40 years ago. “Anthem” sounds more urgent today than when it was first penned. “The Future” & “First We Engage Manahattan” are even more biting now in the 21st Century than when they were first penned. Cohen’s increased age gives songs such as “Boogie Street,” “Tower of Song,” & “Democracy” a world weariness that makes these songs all the more penetrating. His blooming “If It Be Your Will” sounds as powerful like a prayer as it does one of the loveliest songs ever written. If I don’t halt now, I’ll wind up writing accolades about every song on this DVD. Yes, it is that fabulous!

I’ve been fortunate to eye so many of the greats in my lifetime - legends whose works will be remembered for decades to near. Some have been surly and stand-offish. Others have been appreciative and welcoming toward their audience.

It is refreshing to peek the best of everything embodied in this Leonard Cohen concert. Songs that are amongst the best ever written, calm performed with a passion (as well as with the added wisdom that comes from Cohen being 74 years young), with a band & audience & singer all equally committed to one another.

There are moments when I laughed out loud at Leonard’s deadpan, wry humor. There were times when tears welled in my eyes from the sincerity of the words that came out of his mouth, either spoken or in song.

In a day and age where so grand seems packaged and perfunctionary, it is refreshing to glance & hear someone such as Cohen whose observations can warm the heart or nick like a knife to bag to the heart of a matter. He is the proper deal. No airs, no faux modesty…honest a man with four decades’ worth of majestic material, with an grand band whose respect for Cohen is reciprocated by their singer with his respect for their talents & abilities, along with a good warmth & sense of humanity that allows Leonard Cohen to turn a tremendous London venue into a setting that is as intimate as being in one’s living room.

Without a doubt, one of the finest, most racy and most satisfying concert DVDs I’ve ever seen.

I’m joyful that I opened this prior to April 13. Seeing this makes me leer forward to seeing Cohen in a tiny Oakland theater even more so than I already was.

However, had I not been fortunate enough to have gotten a sign for his upcoming concert, I have to say that this DVD would have been a more than radiant consolation. It is worth every cent. The staging, lighting, musicianship, song selection and sound are painstakingly stellar, obviously given large care & mighty belief.

This is a fair gem, a most righteous representation of one of the greatest songwriters of our time.

This is shapely distinguished a bare bones DVD featuring extended London concert footage. I have no beef with the camera work. It is simple, but effective, and grand preferable to so many concert videos where the camera moves so worthy and cuts from one angle to the next occur so fleet it threatens to give one vertigo, or at least a headache.

The choice of 4:3 aspect ratio, in an era where even run-of-the-mill TV shows are widescreen, is inexplicable. The video quality is splendid, but not tremendous.

The audio could have been better. Happily, an uncompressed LCPM stereo track is available (the default) on the DVD, which should compose for maximum sound quality. But the disc producers chose to muck this up, too. The sound is dynamically compressed, i.e. the soft parts are made loud so the dynamic disagreement between soft and loud is blunted. When the band gets going rotund blast, the sound is congested — it loses some clarity. Nevertheless, I would rate the sound as splendid, not tall — equivalent in sound quality to a musical segment on the Letterman indicate or Tonight Present on digital TV.

The concert is tall, and Leonard is fleshy of warmth and grit, whatever is called for. Leonard Cohen appears to be having the time of his life, and the band is perfect. His angelic choir, a trio of female backup singers, is aesthetic. The guitarist provides Knopfler-esque lead lines, and his “wind instrument” and keyboard players add richness to the mix.

This is the perfect introduction to Leonard Cohen. It represents his best compositions (though I am disappointed that Joan of Arc is not section of the situation list) . At age 74 Cohen’s state is a bit husky, but these performances are as salubrious as any I’ve ever heard on his studio albums or live material. (Granted, I do not have a great collection of Cohen albums, however I like very remarkable his songs, including those performed by other artists.) It’s hard to imagine him ever topping this.

If you are irregular with Leonard Cohen’s music, it is generally quite simple, with favorite chord progressions and easy melodies. You might snappy net yourself singing along with these tunes. Cohen’s strengths are his poetry and his delivery of the poetic line. He has always loved embellishing the simplicity of the songs with female choruses and fuller arrangements, while the structure retains the essence of folk music. Sometimes he favors a Spanish rhythm.

For me, this is the definitive Leonard Cohen live performance, mighty as Joni Mitchell’s Shadows and Light concert DVD highlights her best songs and best performances a with dream team band. That DVD is also deficient technically, but the music shines through. So it is here. It’s a five star concert with one star deducted for technical quality that does not measure up to the artistry of the performance.

It’s the lawful mystery of the universe,

The Triphibian monster Gappa!’

And that was the theme song that heralded my introduction to Gappa the Triphibian Monsters (1967) aka Monster from a Prehistoric Planet aka Daikyojû Gappa, a tedious entry into the Japanese giant monster craze of the mid to leisurely 60s, and the only monster movie to be released by Nikkatsu Studios (according to the liner notes, the studio switched to the more marvelous genre of softcore prior to going out of business) . Directed by Haruyasu Noguchi, and special effects by Akira Watanabe (Godzilla, Godzilla Raids Again, Rodan! The Flying Monster, Ruin All Monsters), the film features performances by Tamio Kawaji (The Strange Savor Makers) and Yôko Yamamoto (Duel in the Storm), among others.

Now I’d like to include some additional lyrics, based on what I saw last night…

`Yawn if you will, yawn if you might,

The Triphibian monsters are coming tonight,

Giant chickens attack Japan,

Run no further I have a thought,

Set the table, invite the guests,

With my culinary skills I shall notice,

So minute children don’t you bellow,

Would you like breast, flit, or thigh? ‘

Okay, I may never acquire an offer for a recording contract, but at least my addition was on par with the recent material. As the film begins we learn of a crew of scientists and journalists traveling on a cargo ship to Obelisk Island, located somewhere in South Seas. Seems they were hired by a wealthy, Japanese publisher to retrieve rare and exotic plant and animal samples, which will become section of a opinion that includes opening an amusement park on one of these remote islands…a dapper amazing Hello Kitty business venture, if you ask me…anyway, the ship arrives at the island, which is complete with erupting volcano, a slight native village, and a really annoying native boy named Saki, and inaugurate exploring, against the protests of the natives, as they awe the awakening of Gappa, whom the explorers bewitch is some local deity hokum. In a cave, under the volcano, they derive not only a lake, but also a giant egg, which begins to hatch after some ground tremors (did I mention the volcano is spewing forth hot magma? ) . From within the egg something gooey this arrangement comes, in the fabricate of a mucus swathed lizard creature, which the explorers retract and hold serve with them to Japan…definitely not a respectable concept, as, after they’ve gone, something stirs in the underground lake…two somethings, to be true. Seems the slimy, reptilian infant had parents, and they’re none too please to survey someone has since buggered off with their offspring. After a less than enthralling rampage on the local village (thatch huts crush handsome easily), the poor twosome employ some sort of innate homing senses to locate junior, which leads them to Japan, which leads to great more satisfying things to crush, crash, and extinguish (thankfully) . It’s collateral pain a go-go as Gappa squared unleash their wrathful fury proving yet again one shouldn’t approach between giant, fire breathing monster chickens and their children.

I’ll verbalize you what, I’m no expert on the kaijû eiga (monster pictures) genre, but I have seen a few, and Gappa seems like a lesser entry. It’s objective so dreary…we don’t peruse any monsters until about a half hour in, and even then it’s the wee one hatched from the egg. We then have to wait another half hour before we actually find some action, as that’s when the adult creature rise from their watery respite in search of their baby. An hour is impartial too long to develop the viewers for this kind of film to wait for any staunch carnage. As I said, I haven’t seen a whole lot of these films, but others have said there’s really nothing fresh within the record here, and I’d be inclined to fill them as I found myself oh so tempted to rapidly forward through the parts of the film that dragged (I didn’t) . The main strength for this viewer was in the technical aspects, provided by Akira Watanabe. Some of it was lacking, but then some of it was really well done. I notion the cities had quite a bit of detail, especially in terms of the monsters destroying buildings, which didn’t topple apart like crummy, stacked blocks, but valid, unprejudiced to goodness structures. I also notion some of the background sets and lighting aspects done really well. The destruction of the industrial sector was delicate frosty, as was the brief, tidal wave sequence. As far as the rest, it was all disposable. The monsters were objective goofy. They had beaks and wings like a bird, the body (and tail) of a lizard, walked on two legs, could sail, and tended to utilize a lot of time underwater. Oh yeah, they also could breath fire. The story’s simplistic, which I normally wouldn’t have minded in this type of film, but it’s simplicity loaded with sappy `touching moments’, especially advance the extinguish (fire more rockets, damnit!) . And then there’s that dinky native boy…is it written in stone somewhere that every, single one of these film must include a really annoying child presence? If so, they certainly met the requirement here. And you really have to stare the kid’s appearance to occupy it…in trying to pass him off as a South Seas native, the filmmakers took a Japanese boy, covered him in shoe polish, and made him wear a shaved Afro wig. The result is an oriental boy who looks like he’s been in the oven an hour too long (I like mine medium rare) . The other aspect that really annoyed me was how great time was spent by the characters discussing the virtues of their actions with respect to taking the monster baby. There were basically three groups, the greedy publisher bastich wanted to withhold the cramped diminutive (it was to be the centerpiece of his theme park), the scientist were enthusiastic in research, and then those empathetic to the familial instincts apparently prove within the creatures…whatever…Break! CRUSH! Waste! That’s what we came to behold…there was some of this, but not nearly enough.

Media Blasters/ Shock Tokyo provides a good-looking widescreen (2.35:1) print on this DVD, but it’s not without flaws. The Dolby Digital mono audio comes through cleanly. There’s a choice available on this DVD to behold the film with the fresh dialog with English subtitles, or the film with English dubbing. I preferred the mature, but the inclusion of both was nice. There really isn’t noteworthy in terms of special features, other than some informative liner notes. There are a couple different DVD releases of this film floating around, and Amazon like to mix all the reviews together, so be wary of which version you’re getting if enthusiastic. Something unique…as I write this, Amazon lists the film at a running time of 60 minutes, but it was more like 90 minutes.

By the blueprint, it wasn’t entirely distinct, but it seemed the theme park was meant to be constructed on Obelisk Island, reach the spewing volcano…an respectable area, if you ask me.

When the two Gappa creatures are attacking the industrial share of Tokyo towards the latter raze of Gappa-The Triphibian monster, one of them rears befriend its head and roars. That brief excerpt ended up being musty in the Red Dwarf 4th season episode Meltdown, on a planet that featured some fake-looking dinosaurs.

OK, so noteworthy for where I first saw these beasties. But what is a Gappa? Well, if Godzilla and Rodan mated and had a baby, it’d probably leer like Gappa. It’s inherited Rodan’s head and wings, and Godzilla’s gray-green scaled body, blue flame, and a resonant bawl more like the sound of a flushing toilet played backwards, it doesn’t give a fleet constipated bark like Rodan, but durned if I know whose eyes it got.

The legend too is derivative, coming from Mothra. Basically, Mr. Funatsu, publisher of Playmate Magazine, finances and sends a team that includes reporter Kurosaki, female photographer Koyanagi, and scientist Tonaka to Obelisk Island in the Pacific to earn bird and animal specimens, as well as native women. His view is to commence a holiday theme park so that Japanese do not have to go all the device to the Pacific to win that exotic Polynesian atmosphere. The expedition is greeted by the dark-skinned islanders, led by a white-haired patriarch (same as in Mothra) . However, despite warnings from the young boy Saki not to enter a cave, Kurosaki and Koyanagi do so and win an egg which hatches into a prehistoric-looking reptile. The expedition rob it help with them to Japan, against the wishes of the natives. “Gappa inflamed,” they withhold repeating. And that’s apt, as the parents of the abducted baby head over to Japan to recover their child (q.v. Mothra coming to Japan to rescue the twin fairies) . But Funatsu’s profit-motivated greed gets the better of him, like Nelson in Mothra, and he refuses to give the baby up, even despite the pleading of his young daughter.

The scenes of destruction are nothing considerable to yell home about, as they are the usual retreads of people in rubber suits stomping on model Tokyos, trampling on buildings, melting model tanks, blasting airplanes out of the sky, and convoys of military vehicles.

Apart from this being widescreen and in current Japanese, something not available in any of the Toho monster pics over here, there are some piquant issues explored. One is the examination of empathic thought. In one scene, Saki and Funatsu’s young daughter go up to the captured baby, who quiets down and looks at them sadly, showing a link between animal and human kindness.

Another is the role of women in 1960’s Japan. In the unlit cave, Koyanagi becomes a bit hesitant. Kurosaki then taunts her, “[fine], go befriend marry an office worker, have babies and change diapers” a la the venerable role of women in the new world. One phrase that isn’t translated in the subtitles is “tamanegi o kitte,” meaning cutting onions. In other words, pause in the kitchen.

So what does that title mean, “triphibian”? Well, given its Greek etymology, amphibian means able to live a double life, in water and in land, as frogs and salamanders. Triphibian thus means water, land, and air.

Despite some serious issues explored, material cribbed from Godzilla, Rodan, and Mothra by Kaiju Productions, (kaiju meaning Japanese for monster) and unconvincing monsters overshadow what could’ve been a honorable account.

This is a mammoth disc region! I didn’t gawk any technical problems like the share 1 dwelling seemed to be plagued with. The booklets are a plus. I like the sound cd it comes with(some of the stories are quite droll!), as well as the manga volume 2. My only disappointment is the cheap box it all comes in. Other than that, it’s fantastic! You won’t be disappointed with this site!

I esteem this point to and I deem NBC actually made one apt decison this year by renewing it. Steve Carrell is genious as Michael Scott the manager with a exiguous too powerful enthusiasm. The supporting cast is gargantuan and I’m jubilant that the bonus features are advantageous because a 6 episode season of a half hour note is hardly worth twenty-two dollars but it’s worth it. I didn’t reflect the pilot was spacious but I tuned in again and I’m satisfied I did. I hope that if you don’t observe this present that you settle to try it out because it is brillant. A lot of people say it isn’t as splendid as the British version but it comes halt. Check out Diversity Day it’s the best in the area.

Like most other fans of the gigantic BBC series THE OFFICE, I was absolutely troubled when they announced that they were doing an American version of the explain. Ricky Gervais’s prove was so perfect, so modern that it didn’t seem possible for it to be successfully translated into an American context. If you haven’t seen the American version but have seen the BBC current, the first query is almost certainly going to be: how can they possibly do the explain without Ricky Gervais in the lead? Does Steve Carell manage to fabricate us forget Ricky? Well, not quite. There is absolutely no expect that Ricky Gervais’s David Brent is better than Steve Carell’s Michael Scott. We laugh at Michael Scott, but we laugh with David Brent. That is the awful news. The pleasurable news is that while Carell’s character is not as likable as Gervais’s, he is possibly about 90% as amusing, which means that the American exhibit is quite unexpectedly a very laughable point to.

Once the prove gets into unique material, it is actually quite helpful. The second episode deals with diversity training (i.e., racial sensitivity training), with Michael Scott attempting to purchase over the training by injecting such expressionless sensitivity questions as, “Name another run to which you are attracted to sexually.” The irony is that the only reason the training was instituted because of racially charged jokes Michael had told, but he remains blissfully ignorant of the fact that he was the one being targeted. Another vast episode is the one where Michael and the white-collar workers play the warehouse workers in a game of basketball. Michael ignores the overweight white guy (who later turns out to be a unimaginative shot) and the Hispanic guy (who is also a tiring, shot) in favor of the office African-American, who turns out to be a simply horrendous player.

I have to add that those who are giving this one star are clearly fans of the fresh who have never bothered to behold the American version. As I pointed out above, while it isn’t quite as marvelous as the unusual, it is nonetheless quite ample on its hold merits.

2006 has been a detached year for event films. The predicted blockbusters this past summer elegant great underperformed despite some being exactly as advantageous as I belief they’d be. Other than Johnny Depp and the gang’s Pirates of the Caribbean: Listless Man’s Chest, every blockbuster didn’t blow the industry out of the water. It’s a very sterling thing that I had smaller films to tide me over. This year has been a very worthy ones for some independent-minded and smaller films which came out during the tiresome first couple months of the year and during the graveyard release months between the ruin of summer and the originate of the leisurely year holidays. I’ve already had the chance to glimpse such very estimable films like Running Panicked from Wayne Kramer and Hard Candy from David Slade to The Proposition from John Hillcoat. I am gratified to say that Christopher Nolan’s film adaptation of Christopher Priest’s new, The Prestige is another non-blockbuster that excites, entertains and, in the kill, keeps the audience mystified but not confused.

I’ve read Christopher Priest’s unusual about dueling tedious 19th-century London magicians. It’s a unique written in epistolary format with each chapter and share written as entries into the journal of one of the main characters in the tale. The current itself is blooming straightforward as it tells the account in approach chronological order. I was hesistant to embrace this film adaptation when I first heard about it since alot of the mystery of of the legend wouldn’t translate so well in film if they followed the strict order of how the memoir was told in the new. For Christopher Nolan and his brother, Jonathan, to impartial adapt the unusual straight-out would’ve made for a wearisome and unimaginative mystery-thriller. I was elated that the Nolan brothers were inventive enough to borrow abit from Christopher Nolan’s first feature film, Memento. Their film adaptation of The Prestige doesn’t go backwards in its memoir, but it does mixes up the chronological order of the record somewhat, but not to the point that Tarantino does in Pulp Fiction and Demolish Bill. The two Nolans fudges abit with the timeline to add some backstory filler to wait on give the characters that Christian Bale and Hugh Jackman portrays with the reason for their pathological obsession with each other.

Christopher and Jonathan Nolan’s screenplay for The Prestige was able to support the mystery of the tale intact, but it also keeps the amount of red herrings in such films to a minimum. Michael Caine’s character, Harry Cutter, opens up the film explaining objective exactly what constitutes a magic trick on stage. How it’s divided into three parts. First, there’s “The Pledge” wherein the magician shows the audience something ordinary he or she will spend in the trick. Soon, the magician will follow this up with “The Turn” where the abovementioned ordinary object does something astonishing in front of the audience. The pay-off of the magician’s trick is “The Prestige” where the audience’s astonishment occurs as they fail to deconstruct and figure out the means of the trick. That’s pleasing powerful the film in a nutshell. It’s one spacious magic trick. The clues are there for the audience to glimpse, catch and extrapolate their respond to the mystery that is the myth. The screenplay doesn’t treat the audience as if they need to be hand-held throughout the film. In fact, anyone who pays attention will be able to solve one-half of the mystery by the first hour. I won’t say exactly whose half of the mystery it will be but people will be kicking themselves afterwards if they don’t figure it out honest away.

This magic trick of a film does have its many underlying layers of themes to add some complexity, drama and tension to the characters of Alfred Borden (Christian Bale) and Rupert Angier (Hugh Jackman) . I’ve already mentioned that throughout the film their mutual obsession about each other is due to a backstory detailing their past. A past where they were initially friends — rivals even — and apprentices to the magician Harry Cutter (excellently played by Michael Caine as the only yell of reason throughout the film) . Borden and Angier’s obsession is not unbiased in ruining and sabotaging each other’s magic tricks and lives, but also trying to catch out each other’s secrets as they both learn magic tricks which amaze and thrill the gentry of London’s stage. From the beginning of the film these two characters launch a paddle towards a path of destructive behavior which puts not fair each other’s lives at risk, but those who they care about. All of it in the name of humiliating and upstaging the other due to a tragic incident early in their mutual careers. These two individuals were not sympathetic characters and I applaud Christopher Nolan and his brother for not softening up their hard edges.

Most adaptors will try to execute a story’s characters more sympathetic and likable. They went the opposite in The Prestige. But even these two unlit characters continue to exude the charisma and strong personalities that the audience will root for one or the other. Should they root for the charismatic and born shownman that Hugh Jackman’s Angier character plays or go for the perfectionist Borden character Christian Bale plays. A perfectionist whose technical skills surpasses that of Angier’s but whose introverted and brooding personality makes him miniature or no stage presence.

Both Jackman and Bale play their characters well. The film wouldn’t be so pleasant if it wasn’t for the work of these two actors. It helps that they’re surrounded by quality supporting character like Michael Caine as the seasoned, feeble mentor to the dueling magicians. Even Scarlett Johansson does very well with the piece she’s given. It’s a portion that many sees as more of a throwaway character. A fragment of very good-looking distraction for both the epic and the audience. But she gamely plays the role of pawn for both Angier and Borden. Unlike Michael Caine’s character who remains the singular order of sanity in the film, even Johansson’s character of Olivia gets pulled into the obsessions and betrayals that’s plagued both Angier and Borden. But in the slay, she’s unprejudiced piece of the process of “The Turn” and if people have been watching the film closely apt from the beginning then she’s also a clue as to the secret of one of the fabulous magic tricks shown by the two magicians.

The Prestige also has a clear see about it. The 19th-century London honest before the initiate of the modern millenium gives it a obvious sense of Victorian-era familiarity. Production designer Nathan Crowley shows a London at the height of its Gilded Age, but soon gives scheme to a distinct steampunk glance as inventor Nikola Tesla makes an appearance during an integral piece of the legend. David Bowie portrays Tesla as an eccentric genius whose search for the secrets of the universe will lead to the discovery of what many of that era would deem magic. It’s the ingenius looking technology created for the Tesla sequence which finally gives The Prestige it’s root in fantasy and science-fiction. The film doesn’t dwell on this unique development but from that share of the sage and until the raze, the film takes on a gape and feel of a steampunk mystery-thriller. There’s not enough films that tries to mine this modern subgenre and I, for one, am joyful that Christopher Nolan added this unique dimension to the film’s overall peek.

In the raze, The Prestige really needs to be seen to be appreciated and for people to perform up their minds about the film. Some will look it as a thriller with twists and turns that doesn’t insult the intelligence of its audience. Some may view the film as fair one mountainous gimmick from inaugurate to destroy. Those people will probably be factual as well. The film at its most basic level is one long magic trick with all three acts. It has “The Pledge” which is then followed up by “The Turn” and then ends with “The Prestige”. It will be up to each individual who sees the film to execute the final decision as to whether they’ve bought into all three acts of the magic trick that is The Prestige, or approach away having felt like they’ve wasted their time. I’ve not reach across many who felt like the latter, even those whose possess feelings about the film don’t arrive the same level of praise as I have for Christopher Nolan’s latest offering. All I know is that this is a film that delivers on its premise to confound and amaze. It also continues to validate my views that Bruce Wayne and Batman are in very proper hands with Christopher Nolan at the wheel. The Prestige is easily one of the best film of 2006.

Like many other reviewers, I came into Christopher Nolan’s “The Prestige” with high expectations. He, thus far, has a heavenly excellent track describe in my book. “Batman Begins” ranks highly among adult laughable book movies, but prior to that–he scored sizable with the sublime “Memento” and the underappreciated “Insomnia” (where, miraculously, he coaxed restrained performances from both Al Pacino and Robin Williams) . Set in the world of magic, two practitioners (Bale and Jackman) originate out together in an act devised by Michael Caine. When a tragedy strikes, Jackman loses his wife and holds Bale accountable. Though they go their separate ways, they never mentally disconnect. Jackman plots revenge, Bale retaliates and their lives become a complex game of one-upmanship–as each strives to be the better illusionist, to boast the better trick. The film is a sleek and scandalous mechanism as rage and jealousy propel the action. While this has left some people feeling cold–there is no one to particularly root for–I found it refreshingly mean tantalizing and believable. Jackman and Bale both give tremendous, passionate performances. Whether or not you like the movie, I deem it would be hard not to examine that these are two undervalued performers getting a chance to do some “mammoth” acting. Caine is terrific, as always, and Scarlett Johansson is perfect as a woman caught between the feuding warriors.

As you might demand from a Nolan film, there are some surprises–some tricks to be revealed in the film’s prestige. Now I have an gaze for movie “surprises,” I guess I’m too suspicious or analytical. I figured out one of the essential surprises early on–but that didn’t lessen my interest in the film, I was objective as challenging to look how it played out. The film is built in a multilayered flashback structure that is captivating and rewarding. It adds to the dramatic revelations of the final act. But there is a science fiction element that is dropped in at the last moment. And while I know that the film is actually based on a sci-fi work, this was the least compelling aspect of the film. In fact, it might have ruined a lesser movie altogether. After so noteworthy trusty emotion, such a amazing setup, so mighty believability–this status twist speedy brings what was a tall film serve to earth as a reliable one.

I’ve seen this video countless times. More times, than any other movie. And every time I survey it, it moves me to tears. To experience a care for so factual and so deep is a miracle and to lose it… it’s beyond me. But to even experience it and recognize a witness of it (from this movie) is a wonder enough. The treasure narrative between rich Harvard hockey-player Oliver Barrett IV (played by Ryan O’Neal) and smart-mouthed Radcliffe gal Jennifer Cavilleri (played by Ali McGraw) is one of those once-in-a-lifetime treasure stories… captured on film. These two star-crossed lovers who are from the opposite ends of the socio-economic ladder overcome all obstacles (disapproving parents, advance poverty and Harvard Law School) to create their adore work. The only thing going for them was their appreciate and devotion to each other. And fair when things were finally looking up… tragedy strikes.

The book written by Eric Segal is even more spirited but to sight the movie, is unbiased as a huge experience. It’s not unbiased a tearjerker! It’s truly a masterpiece! I Like THIS MOVIE! It’s my ALL TIME accepted movie.

Does anyone know if they concept to release this on DVD?

I have seen it countless times since if first came out in 1970 and was so thrilled to finally secure my personal video of it this Christmas.

If you cherish a treasure narrative, this is the penultimate one. Oliver, the Harvard jock,and Jennifer, the abominable and smart-mouthed music student from Rhode Island, touch the deepest parts of our hearts. Theirs is the care for fable that we all want—two people completely dedicated to each other. They survive class differences and parental disapproval because they cherish each other. How fantastic to search for the heart-warming snowball scenes when their savor is so certain to viewers.

Of course, it is in the kill, a tear-jerker that requires unlimited tissues. The couple that has it all can not overcome the one thing that is out of their hands.

You’ll laugh and bawl and be touched for a lifetime. This is the greatest movie. Don’t miss it.

Mel Gibson and Kurt Russell are very safe in this movie, and are very believable as lifelong friends at a crossroad. Mel is a retired drug dealer while Kurt is a cop. Not a likely duo to occupy a friendship. Michelle Pheiffer portrays the admire interest of Mel, and do those two have chemistry! This is a perfect match, and they are combustible together. While this is an older film, it calm has the ingredients that all mammoth films do.

Tequila Sunrise is an sterling crime/action movie. It has suffered a bit from abominable press, which in my concept is totally unjustified. People have said, that the actors were wasted on this kind of movie. This is nonsense! Tequila Sunrise is one of the best movies in its genre BECAUSE it was made with agreeable, instead of the usual mediocre actors. It shows clearly, that with pleasurable acting and a somewhat complecated script a rather unasuming movie can rise to unexpacted heights. Mel Gibson and Kurt Russel are particularly well good to their respective roles as sympathetic ex-crook and not so sympathetic police officer. Michelle Pfeiffer in a somewhat recent role as the woman in between these two lends a depth to the piece which females in this kind of tale usually lack. Finally Raul Julia as a mexican dope smuggler is a very appetizing peek. You can never really loathe him even when he starts issuing execution orders. A pleausre to explore.

This is the final volume of the Lucky Star OVA containing episodes 21-24. Since the usual TV season in Japan is 13 episodes, the termination of the indicate at episode 24 instead of 26 is irregular. The four episodes on the disk are a curious variety - two are the typical “lop of life” episodes with diminutive place aside from the joke of the scene. Reaching the waste of Lucky Star was like coming to the last part of the best box of chocolates you ever ate, wanting more, and finding out that the candy company went out of business. The extinguish of Azamanga Diaoh left me choked up, fondly remembering my believe high school days. The slay of Lucky Star did not give worthy such deep emotional ties to the memoir and characters, instead I was left thinking “Oh, nuts, it can’t objective waste here!”

This volume ended the series rather abruptly in a “its not over, yet” kind of diagram because the Manga is level-headed being made and all 26 episodes were glowing great derived from 4 volumes of Manga (unruffled ongoing) . so there will prolly be another season in like 2-3 years, in fact an OAV was already created and licensed.

anyways, this volume holds up to the prior volumes in its comedy and originality. its well worth the take and will most likely shine as an anime classic that others will fail to recreate.

-the only predicament i had with this volume is that the negate actress for Konata changed her stutter slightly and added map too roughness in design too many lines instead of doing the cutesy type content and it kinda messed up the experience a litte.

-Other than that this volume ruled
